Chicago Bears’ Board Votes to Leave Illinois, Move to Indiana Stadium

by Nick R. Hamilton

The Chicago Bears has taken a significant step toward leaving Illinois, with the franchise’s Board of Directors voting to advance plans for a new stadium project in Hammond, Indiana.

This move that could end the team’s century-long presence in Chicago.

The vote marks the first time the Bears’ board has formally acted on a stadium site proposal, signaling growing momentum behind a relocation effort that would move one of the NFL’s founding franchises across state lines.

Bears Leadership Backs Indiana Stadium Project

Following the vote, Bears Chairman George H. McCaskey and CEO Kevin Warren released a joint statement outlining their vision for the proposed development.

“We believe a world-class stadium project in Hammond will transform the region, connecting Northwest Indiana and the South Side of Chicago through the Loop and across the neighborhoods and suburbs stretching north of the city,” the statement said.

While the exact site has not yet been announced, the direction of the franchise appears increasingly clear.

Details regarding financing, land acquisition, permitting, and government approvals have not yet been released.

Illinois Lawmakers Failed to Reach a Deal

The timing of the board vote has drawn attention because it came only days after Illinois lawmakers concluded their spring legislative session.

Despite years of public discussions about stadium options and potential development projects, state leaders failed to produce an agreement capable of keeping the franchise in Illinois before the legislative session ended.

Professional sports franchises rarely pursue relocation without years of planning and negotiation.
