BREAKING: Legendary Bears Coach Dead At 86

By

Mike Ditka — the hard-edged Hall of Famer who became the face of Chicago Bears football for an entire generation — has died at 86.

For Chicago, the loss reaches far beyond a former coach leaving the field.

This is the loss of Da Coach.

Ditka’s family announced his death Friday morning in a statement shared by Jarrett Payton, the son of Bears legend Walter Payton.

The family acknowledged the Hall of Fame player and leader of the Bears’ Super Bowl XX championship team the world knew. At home, he was a husband, father, grandfather and friend.

The NFL confirmed that the family statement was released through Payton. An immediate cause of death was not disclosed in the first reports.

Born in Carnegie, Pennsylvania, in 1939 and raised in nearby Aliquippa, Ditka arrived in professional football carrying the blue-collar edge that would define his public life.

He played for the Bears, Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys before moving into coaching, collecting championships in Chicago and Dallas while helping redefine what a tight end could do. His career eventually stretched across playing, championship seasons, broadcasting, restaurants and advocacy for retired players who needed better medical and retirement support.

The family’s announcement described the football legend the public knew, then drew a private distinction: to them, he was the heart of their family.

That contrast explains the size of Friday’s reaction: one family lost its center while a football city lost the man who came to embody its toughness.
