by David Hawkins
An armed bystander fatally shot a teenage gunman who attacked an Oregon elementary school Thursday, stopping a massacre that killed at least three children and one adult, according to law enforcement sources cited by multiple outlets.
Federal sources told Fox News that the concealed-carrying bystander “definitely prevented more deaths” at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend.
A separate law enforcement source told USA TODAY that the bystander was legally carrying a concealed weapon and followed the shooter.
CBS News also reported that a bystander shot and killed the 16-year-old suspect.

Police received the first call around 12:59 p.m., reporting that a man had fired into a vehicle outside the school.
Within approximately one minute, additional callers reported that someone had entered the building and started shooting.
Early reporting from The Source Weekly described a passerby confronting an armed man outside the school.
The gunman then fired at a vehicle, shattering a window, before entering the building, reportedly near the special education area.
Police confirmed they were investigating reports of gunfire directed at a vehicle.
Bend Police communications manager Sheila Miller said officers arrived at 1:02 p.m.
Seconds later, they received word that the suspect was down.
“We don’t have confirmation yet who shot the suspect,” Miller said during the initial police briefing.
“It may have been a bystander.”
Subsequent reporting from Fox News, USA TODAY, and CBS News cited law enforcement sources identifying an armed bystander as the person who stopped the shooter.
