JUST IN: A Voice From Talarico’s Past Resurfaces With A Damning Warning

By

A political figure who knew James Talarico long before his rise through Texas politics has resurfaced with a story the Democrat’s Senate campaign will not want voters to ignore.

Mike Garcia, who led the University of Texas College Republicans while Talarico ran the University Democrats, says an old bipartisan campaign to lower college tuition ended with a betrayal.

Garcia is alleging that Talarico walked away from the effort to protect his own political future. No independent reporting has established that motive.

Contemporary reporting and university records do confirm key pieces of the timeline.

That distinction matters as the allegation races through the closing stretch of the Texas Senate contest. It also explains why the old campus dispute is drawing fresh scrutiny now.

Garcia introduced the dispute in a thread that exploded across X overnight:

Here is what the historical record shows.

ABC News reported in February 2009 that the Tuition Relief Now campaign was pressing the University of Texas system to reverse tuition deregulation. Talarico, then identified as Jimmy Talarico, served as the campaign’s statewide director.

The group argued that tuition increases were putting an unfair burden on Texas students and families. Talarico publicly vowed to keep lobbying after the student government rejected the group’s resolution by a 23-14 vote.

Garcia’s account adds a contested backstory to that public campaign. He says the University Democrats abruptly pulled out of a planned Capitol rally and that members of Talarico’s own organization were angry and confused by the decision.

According to Garcia, he later heard that Talarico wanted to remain in the good graces of university leaders who opposed the tuition-cut effort. Garcia then points to Talarico’s next move inside campus government as evidence supporting his suspicions.
