Millions Of Americans Warned As Monster Storm ‘Swallows’ Homes

A massive storm system is sweeping across the eastern United States, putting an estimated 120 million Americans in its path as catastrophic flooding swallows homes, forces evacuations and triggers emergency warnings across the South.

The dangerous weather unleashed its first major impacts along the Georgia-Tennessee border overnight Wednesday, sending rivers surging over their banks and leaving entire neighborhoods underwater.

By Thursday morning, the National Weather Service had issued flash flood emergencies in parts of northern Georgia and southeastern Tennessee, warning residents that the rapidly rising water posed an immediate threat to their lives.

“This is a particularly dangerous situation. Seek higher ground now! Life threatening flash flooding of low water crossings, small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses.”

Communities in Fannin County, Georgia, and Polk County, Tennessee, were among the hardest hit after torrential rainfall overwhelmed local waterways.

Some areas received more than six inches of rain, with reports of even higher totals in portions of northern Georgia.

In McCaysville, Georgia, and neighboring Copperhill, Tennessee, floodwaters surged through streets and into buildings, leaving emergency crews scrambling to rescue stranded residents.

The Toccoa and Ocoee rivers rose dramatically as runoff poured into the waterways, creating dangerous conditions for nearby homes and businesses.

Local authorities ordered evacuations as the flooding intensified, while drivers were warned to avoid roads covered by water.

The National Weather Service reported that some locations were experiencing catastrophic flooding, with homes and businesses inundated.

But the destruction along the Georgia-Tennessee border could be only the beginning of a much larger weather event.

Forecasters warned that the powerful low-pressure system would continue pushing toward the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, bringing heavy rainfall to communities across as many as 23 states.

Thunderstorms were expected to intensify across the Carolinas on Thursday, while widespread rain spread northward through Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania and into New England.

Major population centers, including New York City, Boston, Hartford, Atlantic City and Norfolk, could experience significant disruptions as the system moves along the East Coast.

AccuWeather meteorologists warned that the storm could linger through Saturday, increasing the threat of flooding in vulnerable communities.
