NSA spying flap extends to contents of U.S. phone calls

The National Security Agency has acknowledged in a new classified briefing that it does not need court authorization to listen to domestic phone calls, a participant said. Rep. Supreme Court Rules That Pre-Miranda Silence Can Be Used Against Defendant To Prove Guilt

In a major loss for individual rights vis-a-vis the police, the Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that prosecutors could use a person’s silence against them in court if it comes before he’s told of his right to remain silent. The prosecutors used the silence of Genovevo Salinas to convict him of a 1992 murder. Because this was a non-custodial interview, the Court ruled that the prosecutors could use his silence even though citizens are allowed to refuse to speak with police. Neighbors organize ‘Glock Block’ after increase in crime

Frustrated by an increase in petty crime,  residents of an Oregon neighborhood have decided to arm themselves instead of  calling the police. OTTAWA – Justin Trudeau is promising to compensate all groups that paid him hefty speaking fees to participate in fundraising events since he became an MP. Duma bars Russian children from adoption by foreign same sex couples

Russia’s Lower House has passed an amendment that bans the adoption of Russian children by same sex couples from abroad. The amendment was passed on Tuesday as the State Duma approved  the second reading of the bill to protect orphans. The amendment also forbids single people who are citizens or  permanent residents of countries that allow same sex marriage to  become adoptive parents or legal guardians of Russian children. New York man facing criminal charges for stopping vandals

A New York man was arrested and charged for endangering the welfare of four children who allegedly broke into and vandalized his father-in-law’s home, causing property damage in excess of $40,000 The man locked the children into a closet until police arrived,  and claims he made no threats to hurt them.
