California’s Jerry Brown considers easing logging rules to help fight fires

California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) is proposing sweeping new legislation that would make it easier for private landowners to cut down trees on their land as the state deals with one of its worst wildfire seasons in years.

Brown’s plan, which first was reported by the Mercury News Thursday, would allow landowners living on property of 300 acres or less to cut down trees with up to a 36-inch diameter without a permit. The current regulation ends at 26 inches in diameter.

Lecturers Warned Not to Use Capital Letters to Avoid Scaring Students

Lecturers in the journalism department at Leeds Trinity University in the United Kingdom were warned not to use all caps when communicating with students because it might make them too scared to do the assignment.

“Despite our best attempts to explain assessment tasks, any lack of clarity can generate anxiety and even discourage students from attempting the assessment at all,” states a memo that the lecturers received, according to The Express. “Generally, avoid using capital letters for emphasis and the overuse of ‘do’, and, especially, ‘DON’T.’”

Clapping replaced with jazz hands over fears noise could trigger anxiety among students

Clapping has been replaced with “jazz hands” at a student union, amid fears that the noise of applause could trigger anxiety among some students.

Whooping is also discouraged at Manchester University student union events on the basis that the loud noise may be a problem for those with sensory issues.

The use of “jazz hands” – where students wave their hands in the air – is the British Sign Language expression for applause and is deemed a more inclusive gesture.

The yellow jackets are a reminder Emmanuel Macron rules only one version of France

mmanuel Macron can’t catch a breath. He just wants to #makeourplanetgreatagain, but the French keep ruining his plans.

Last year’s demonstrations against his labour law reform had already tested his presidency (he responded by calling the protesters “slackers”, which didn’t exactly go down well). Fast forward 12 months, a bodyguard scandal, plummeting approval ratings, three ministers’ resignations, to 17 November 2018: the day the French on low and middle incomes said “enough”.

The Riots In France Aren’t Just About Gas Taxes, But About The West’s Decline

While protests and car-burnings are actually common in France, what’s happening now is much worse than usual and will not go away anytime soon. What observers should know is that this is not about fuel prices or Macron’s incompetence; this is about the fall of the West.
