Ontario voters to cast ballot for Doug Ford, poll says

A Campaign Research survey found 43 per cent of Ontario residents would vote for the Conservative party leader, despite Ontario NDP leader Andrea Horwath having high approval numbers.

Of the 1,637 Ontario voters surveyed online between March 12 and 14, Campaign Research found that 43 per cent of decided voters intended to support the Progressive Conservatives in the June election, 27 per cent backed the Liberals, and 23 per cent supported the NDP.

Yes, Wynne’s promise of free stuff may very well change voters’ minds

Wednesday’s provincial budget was the last throw of the dice by the embattled Liberals, a Hail Mary if you like, to seek a way out of the abyss and back into political contention.

The budget, with its billions in social spending, has been roundly criticized for what it is: a big play for votes in the June 7 election. But there is a reason the Liberals are doing it. They cannot hope to win an election in which change is the overriding theme. Kathleen Wynne has to find a way to change the conversation and turn the ballot question into who’s more capable of helping ease the burden on you and your family.

Ontario MPP ‘proud’ of province’s debt and ‘would do it again’

MPP Bob Delaney said that the Liberals’ swelling of Ontario’s debt was the ‘responsible’ and ‘correct’ thing to do

During a constituent briefing about Ontario’s new budget, a Liberal MPP said he was “proud” of the province’s high levels of debt and “would do it again.”

“We have tripled (the debt) and we’re proud of it, because we can afford it,” MPP Bob Delaney said in comments published by the Mississauga News

Ontario’s debt, which currently stands at $311.7 billion, is the most held by any sub-sovereign government in the world. It has also grown precipitously under the current Liberal government, who first took government when Ontario’s debt stood at $138.8 billion.

Delaney, the MPP for Mississauga—Streetsville, was first brought to office in 2003, when the Liberals under Dalton McGuinty began their now-15-year governance stretch.

Ontario now adding debt even faster than before

Last week, Finance Minister Charles Sousa tabled Ontario’s budget for 2018-19. The fact that the free-spending budget creates an operating deficit of nearly $7 billion this year has been widely reported, but this number alone understates the extent the Wynne government’s fiscal plan will add to Ontario’s already substantial debt burden.

In reality, the budget plans a substantial increase in the pace of debt accumulation compared to what has occurred in recent years.

First, let’s review the headline numbers.
The budget plans for a 6% increase in program spending this year (that’s all spending aside from government debt interest payments). This increase comes on top of a nearly identical increase last year, meaning spending will grow by 12.2% over just two years. Predictably, revenue growth hasn’t kept pace, with the result being projected operating deficits of just less than $7 billion in each of the next three fiscal years.

PC leader Doug Ford says no politician has supported black community more than the Ford brothers

The Progressive Conservative leader made the comments Thursday when asked why he wouldn’t be participating in a debate next week organized by black community leaders ahead of the spring election.

“I have massive support in the black community. I love them, they love me,” Doug Ford told reporters. “There’s no other politician in this country, no other politician outside of Rob Ford, that has supported the black community more than I have.”

Doug Ford promises to do more for agricultural community

In his second trip to the riding in as many months, Ontario Progressive Conservative Leader Doug Ford told a Lindsay audience that his party would address the frustration of Ontario voters if he were elected premier in June.

Speaking at a breakfast meet and greet at the Howard Johnson Inn Saturday morning, he touched on health care, hydro, education, agricultural, and senior care during a rousing 30 minute address, drawing huge applause from his supporters.

“I’m a strong believer in surrounding myself with people smarter than myself,” he said, “and that’s why I’ve got (Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock MPP) Laurie Scott and (Peterborough PC candidate) Dave Smith here.”
