Democrats are desperate to avoid a culture war with Trump in 2018

By Alex Roarty Democrats decided 16 months before the 2018 election how they would start winning races again. Gathered in a small Virginia town on a sweltering July day, Chuck Schumer, Nancy Pelosi and their lieutenants laid out a “Better Deal” agenda focused on middle-class jobs and higher wages — a vow, they said, that their party would never again waver from a laser-like focus on the economy. Donald Trump makes some promises difficult to keep. Just days later, the president declared on Twitter that transgender men and women were banned from the military. His action drew a swift...

McCain Blasts US in Speech to Naval Academy, “No More America First”

By Cillian Zeal Arizona Sen. John McCain took another swipe at Trump administration policy in a speech to the U.S. Naval Academy, where he slammed both isolationism and nationalism, ideas he said are ascendant within the President Trump’s White House. In the speech to the midshipmen in Annapolis, Maryland, on Monday, the Senate Armed Services Committee chairman ripped into the Trump administration’s policies, although — taking a Voldemort-like approach that’s become habitual among anti-Trump conservatives — he never mentioned the president’s name. McCain contrasted the “hopeful atmosphere of 1991” after the fall of the Soviet Union with “the current...

Texas AG: Response to Church Shooting Should Be More Armed Law-Abiding Citizens, Not More Gun Control

by AWR Hawkins Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) indicated during an interview with Fox News’s Brian Kilmeade that the response to the Texas church shooting should be more armed law-abiding citizens rather than more gun control. Paxton pointed out that there were numerous laws already on the books, including “laws against murder,” and the attacker violated those laws without hesitation. He observed, “So adding some other gun law, I don’t think would in any way change this guy’s behavior.” He added: It’s not clear to me that [the attacker] wasn’t already prevented from having a gun, given his...
