COMMENTARY: GOOD FRIENDS IN FIREARMS COMMUNITY ARE   ESSENTIAL

The Canadian Shooting Sports Association/Canadian Institute   for Legislative Action (CSSA/CILA) was delighted to attend the 2013 Freedom   Cruise conference held aboard the ship MS Maasdam.

CSSA/CILA executive director Tony Bernardo was the sole   Canadian delegate invited by the hosts — American Conservative Union   Foundation, National Rifle Association (NRA), and Freedom Alliance. NRA   past-president David Keene, who was recently appointed opinion editor at The   Washington Times, attended the conference and discussed firearms politics   extensively with Tony Bernardo during the six-day conference.

Bernardo was the first featured keynote speaker to address   the conference. He shared the Canadian perspective on firearms legislation,   the firearms registry, Canada’s role in the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty   and more. He was in good company with previous conference speakers that   include Ronald Reagan, George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Pat Buchanan, Newt   Gingrich, Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, Allen West and   many other conservative public figures.

“David Keene was surprised that the horrific Sandy   Hook shooting had such a impact on Canadians,” said Bernardo. “I   assured him that the Newtown tragedy commanded media attention in Canada for   weeks and sent our anti-gun lobby into overdrive. He was touched that   Canadian sport shooters shared the Americans’ pain and the unfair anti-gun   accusations.

“Mr. Keene was also very interested in the movement   behind scrapping the Canadian long-gun registry,” adds Bernardo.   “He is impressed that we were able to swing the anti-gun pendulum the opposite   way from all those countries with governments that pretend they can legislate   sanity. It’s a bit ironic that I consulted with so many NRA board members who   are quite impressed with the CSSA’s work in Canada. They were astonished to   learn that our national media often try to discredit the CSSA by claiming we   are run by the NRA. They laughed at the notion and said it was news to   them.”

Tony Bernardo was also asked to speak at future American   Conservative Union Foundation events. He says international forums like these   are important for sharing strategies and tactics that promote conservative   positions. He says he learned a great deal at the conference and many   delegates assured Bernardo that his input was valuable and informative.

“It is good to see that the NRA and CSSA/CILA remain   close allies in promoting truth to assure a future for sport shooters,”   explained Bernardo. “This is good a reminder for responsible firearms   owners in Canada that CSSA/CILA has an important ongoing role on the national   and international stage.

“Our struggles at the U.N. have taught us that our   fight for firearms freedoms is not just national in scope,” he adds.   “Our enemies have an international presence and our long-term survival   requires that we continue to do the same. CSSA/CILA became executive members   of the World Forum on Shooting Activities almost 15 years ago. We have   enjoyed international success from our efforts, but the problems still   exist.”

RECENTLY IN THE NEWS:

BRUCE MONTAGUE TRIAL DATE SET FOR NOVEMBER 15: (The   following is a letter from Bruce Montague)– Dear Supporters: It’s been a   busy summer as we prepared for a June appeal date that got postponed due to   our lawyer Doug Christie who suddenly took ill and died. The Canadian   Constitution Foundation then took on our case and has been working very   diligently to prepare for court. Some changes had to be made to our factum   and as a result the crown will also need more time to respond to those   changes. This means that the court date will now be on Nov. 15 at Queen’s   Park in Toronto. I hope to see some of you there if you can find the time to   attend this hearing.

My case   started out fighting for the right to self defence but has now turned into a   fight for property, including my own home! The Canadian Constitution   Foundation and the lawyers working on my case (Karen Selick and Derek From)   seem very diligent and serious about fighting for the property rights of all   Canadians. My case is just one step in the process of re-establishing our   right to own and enjoy our property free from arbitrary confiscation by the   state. You can visit their website to learn more about the constitutional   issues they are championing on our behalf. Their website address is: http://www.theccf.ca —   Yours in liberty, Bruce Montague

IS THE .303 ON ITS LAST LEGS? The Canadian Rangers   will get new rifles to replace their iconic, nearly 70-year-old Lee-Enfields,   according to Prime Minister Stephen Harper. But Harper said Tuesday he   expects Canada’s Arctic militia will get their new guns “over the next   few years.”

As part of a photo-op, while meeting with the Rangers,   Harper and some of his ministers took in some target shooting. Since they   first stood up in 1947, the Rangers have been equipped with Lee-Enfield   bolt-actions built during the Second World War in a factory in Long Branch, a   neighbourhood in Toronto. They ammunition used – the .303 British – is a   round that was designed in 1888.

DND has warned in the past parts for the iconic antiques   will one day become scarce, and while Harper said there is no problem   currently servicing the rifles, “this is a concern and we believe it is   time,” for the guns to be replaced, he told QMI Agency.

“The Department of National Defence is in the process   of scoping out a program for replacement, and I expect that to happen over   the next few years.”

In 2010, DND outlined a series of criteria for the new guns   as identified by the Rangers themselves, who are also allowed to hunt with   their the DND-issued firearms.

It should be a bolt-action rifle, shoot .308 Winchesters,   with a 20-inch barrel and hold 10 rounds in the magazine as the Enfield   currently does, among other specifics. Harper is touring Canada’s Far North   this week. (Sun News — August 21, 2013)

U.S. ORG SURVEY SHOWS SOLID SUPPORT FOR HUNTERS: A   recent nationwide survey indicates 79 percent of Americans approve of   hunting, marking a five percent increase from 2011 and the highest level   since 1995. “Hunting is a way of life for many of us. Most Americans   recognize and agree with that,” said David Allen, RMEF president and CEO.

“Hunting is conservation! It has a tremendous positive   impact on wildlife and wildlife habitat.”

Responsive Management, a public opinion research   organization focusing on natural resource and outdoor recreation issues,   began to scientifically track nationwide hunting approval trends in 1995. The   most recent finding of 79 percent is the highest percentage to date. Trends   remain relatively steady over the years: 73 percent in 1995, 75 percent in   2003, 78 percent in 2006, 74 percent in 2011 and 79 percent in 2013.

The survey also found that more than half of Americans (52   percent) strongly approve of hunting (79 percent strongly or moderately   approve) while 12 percent disapprove (strongly or moderately) of hunting.   Another 9 percent gave a neutral answer… (Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation   media release — August 15, 2013)

GUN   CONTROL IS A WAR ON WOMEN: Just as the passage of concealed carry laws benefit women immensely, so too the   reverse is true – the passage of more gun control hurts women especially.

Gun control   makes the vulnerable more vulnerable, and those who are already prone to   attack are rendered prone to more attacks.

In the book More Guns, Less Crime, scholar John Lott showed that   women were among the top beneficiaries from concealed carry laws. Conversely,   where gun control is stringent, crimes against women rise.

Take Chicago   for example, the gun control capital of America, where the NYT reported   approximately 1,400 sexual assaults in 2010 alone. Or consider   Chicago’s murder numbers – approximately 441 persons murdered in 2011. And   according to Chicago Police Department, roughly 10 percent of these   murder victims were women.

That means   over 40 women were murdered in 2011, and if the 10 percent rule applies to   2012 as well, it means over 50 may have been killed in 2012, as the number of   murders in Chicago during 2012 was approximately 512.

Might not many of these women be alive now had they not   been denied the right to keep and bear arms?… Read the entire article at http://www.ammoland.com/2013/08/gun-control-is-a-real-war-on-women/#axzz2chm3ebf8   (Ammoland — August 14, 2013)

NFA TO TAKE QUEBEC GOVERNMENT TO TASK: Quebec is   illegally operating a gun registry, though the federal government scrapped it   last year, Canada’s National Firearms Association claims in Federal Court.   While the federal government scrapped the national long-gun registry last   year, destroying registration data to the chagrin of many police   organizations, the Quebec provincial government defiantly refused to turn   over data on its residents, so as to maintain its own gun registry.

Co-plaintiff Shawn Bevins claims the country’s Registrar of   Firearms, the Firearms Commissioner of Canada and Quebec’s Chief Firearms   Officer are still illegally collecting data on non-restricted gun owners and   sellers.

The plaintiffs claim the defendants are illegally operating   a registry and collecting data, and that the Firearms Commissioner of Canada   is illegally refusing to destroy records contained in the scrapped Canadian   Firearms Registry.

The plaintiffs, or applicants, claim Quebec’s Chief   Firearms Officer is “illegally refusing” to tell legal gun dealers   that they no longer have to register sales of non-restricted firearms to   Quebec residents, and are no longer under threat of sanctions for failing to   register sales, transfers or for accepting guns for service or repair without   verifying the firearm is registered.

The officer is “forcing Quebec based firearms dealers   to comply with legislation that has been repealed by Parliament,” the   application states… (Courthouse News Service – August 20, 2013)

18 FACTS THAT SHOW GUNS MAKE US SAFER: The American   people deserve to know the truth about gun control. Passing strict gun   control laws will not make us all safer. In fact, as you will read about   below, even a study conducted at   Harvard found that the more guns a nation has the less crime it   tends to have.

In other words, there is a very strong positive correlation   between more guns and less crime. This is the exact opposite of what the   mainstream media would have us believe, but it makes sense. You see, the   reality is that criminals really, really, really don’t want to get shot. When   you pass strict gun control laws, you take the fear of getting shot away and   criminals tend to flourish. Just look at what is going on in America today.

The places with the highest crime rates are the major   cities where strict gun control laws have been passed. In some of those   cities the police are so overwhelmed that they have announced that they simply   won’t even bother responding to certain kinds of crime anymore. The truth is   that the government cannot protect us adequately, and that is one reason why   millions of preppers are arming themselves and gun sales have been   setting new records year after year.

Unfortunately, the mainstream media and many of our   politicians seem absolutely obsessed with trying to restrict our   constitutional right to own guns. They are waging a relentless campaign to   try to convince the American people that guns are bad. But is that actually   the case? Of course not. The following are 18 little-known gun facts that   prove that guns make us safer…

U.S. PUNDIT WARNS AGAINST WARRIOR COPS: We need   police to catch murderers, thieves and con men, and so we give them special   power – the power to use force on others. Sadly, today’s police use that   power to invade people’s homes over accusations of trivial, nonviolent   offenses — and often do it with tanks, battering rams and armor you’d expect   on battlefields. In his book “Rise of the Warrior Cop,” Radley   Balko recounts the rise of police SWAT teams (SWAT stands for Special Weapons   And Tactics) armed with heavy military equipment. SWAT raids began as rarely   used methods of dealing with violent situations, like hostage-takings. But   government always grows. In the 1970s, there were about 300 SWAT raids per   year. “As of 2005,” says Balko, “100 to 150 per day.”

What began as a few specialized groups of police trained to   address genuine threats to safety has degenerated into small armies   descending on organic farms where farmers sell unpasteurized milk and legal   medical marijuana dispensaries getting raided as if they were heavily armed   threats. The increase began under Nixon-era politicians who wanted to look   “tough on crime,” even if that meant exaggerating the threat posed   by illegal drugs. As the futile war on drugs escalated, cops worried that   drug users would destroy evidence if cops knocked and announced themselves.   So they stopped doing that, changing a centuries-old rule that treated   citizens’ homes as their castles — castles whose owners must be presented   with a warrant before police can enter….
