Recalls over gun rights wrap up today in Colorado

A gun-rights organization says today’s recall election of two state senators proves many Coloradans are angry about restrictive anti-gun legislation passed by the state legislature.

Colorado Senate president John Morse and Senator Angela Giron – both representing districts in the southern part of the state – are facing recall elections Tuesday because they voted for tougher gun-control legislation limiting the size of ammunition magazines and requiring universal background checks. Early voting began August 30 and ended yesterday.

Gun-rights advocates launched the recall initiatives, saying the restrictions are an affront to Second Amendment rights and would not have prevented the mass shooting at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, last year.

Erich Pratt, a spokesman for Gun Owners of America, says the recall effort is terribly important.

“It really could determine the future of Colorado and the future of many states around the country as they’re obviously looking to see what happens in this recall,” he explains. “Of course, we all know that punishing honest gun owners for what one percent of our population does – what we call the ‘criminal element’ – is like cracking down on drunk driving by making it harder for sober people to buy cars. It never works.”
Pratt says the fact that early voting was so strong in these recalls is very encouraging. “Gun control – restricting people’s firearms – has a dramatic impact on energizing those who favor gun rights,” says the GOA spokesman. “We hope that these two are sent packing and that it sends a loud-and-clear message to the rest of Colorado and the rest of the nation.” Pratt points out that gun rights was a major factor in the Republican congressional victories in 1994 and the 2000 presidential election.
