Canada’s Supreme Court Penalizes Walmart f

Canada’s Supreme Court ruled Friday that Wal-Mart must compensate former workers at a Quebec store that was closed after they voted to become the first Wal-Mart store in North America to unionize. The high court ruled in 2009 that Wal-Mart was entitled to close the store in Jonquiere in 2005, seven months after workers voted to unionize. But the workers filed a new case that said Wal-Mart contravened a section of Quebec labor law, which says working conditions must not be altered in any way, shape or form during a unionization process. The court ruled in a five-to-two decision that… View Article

Time to re-evaluate CBC’s mandate and funding

Time to re-evaluate CBC’s mandate and funding It was sad to see a smiling but moist-eyed Leslie MacKinnon arrive at her farewell party in Ottawa on Thursday. MacKinnon decided, reluctantly, to take a voluntary layoff after 35 years of fine work at the CBC. A hard-working storyteller, MacKinnon brought a unique and thoughtful sensibility to her reports, so it’s sad to see her go. And it was sad this spring when Linden MacIntyre decided to leave the Fifth Estate, voluntarily taking a layoff so that the cuts would have a well-known public face. It was sad to hear that Radio… View Article
