New Mexico Democrats Undertake Last Ditch Effort to Ban Private Gun Sales

by AWR Hawkins New Mexico Democrats are assigning a new bill number to failed gun control legislation in hopes of reviving an effort to ban private gun sales. The failed bill–HB 50–and will likely be renumbered HB 548 and taken up by the NM House Judiciary Committee on Monday. HB 50 was sponsored by State Representative Stephanie Garcia Richard (D-Los Alamos). It mandates that New Mexico residents seek out an agent of the state–a Federal Firearms License holder (FFL)–and undergo a background check on every gun sale, whether retail or private. NYT Lambastes Florida GOP for Shielding Citizens’ Right to Armed Self-Defense

by AWR Hawkins Florida Republicans’ efforts to further shield citizens who use lethal force in self-defense is sending The New York Times into apoplexy. Florida already has a Stand Your Ground law, which removes any requirement that a citizen attempt to flee a life or death attack before using lethal force to stop the aggression. Jeff Sessions Asks Chicago’s Obama-Appointed Federal Prosecutor to Resign

by AWR Hawkins On Friday, Attorney General Jeff Sessions asked U.S. Attorney Zachary Fardon and 45 other U.S. Attorneys appointed by Barack Obama to resign. Fardon became Chicago’s “top federal prosecutor on Oct. 23, 2013,” and has been heavily criticized for his lack of prosecution of federal gun law violations. Fardon played up “his office’s role in fighting gun violence on the streets of Chicago” but a Chicago Sun-Times report on “court records in October 2016 showed federal weapons charges in Chicago had actually fallen slightly over the previous five years.” The Sun-Times report squares with the experience of the Chicago Police Board. Trump Signs Repeal of Obama’s Social Security Gun Ban

by AWR Hawkins On a day when legislation benefiting women and black colleges and universities was signed with much pomp and circumstance, President Trump quietly followed through on his pledge to defend the Second Amendment by signing the repeal of Barack Obama’s Social Security gun ban.
