Legislation to Arm Teachers Moving Through Tennessee House

by AWR Hawkins On Wednesday the Tennessee House Civil Justice Subcommittee passed legislation allowing teachers and staff to carry guns at school for self-defense. The legislation–House Bill 1751–is sponsored by representative David Byrd (R-Waynesboro). According to WKRN-TV, HB 1751 is intended to “give school systems in distressed rural counties the ability to allow certain staff and volunteers to carry guns at school and school-sponsored activities, like athletic events.” Byrd said the need for armed teachers is exemplified by his home county–Wayne County–where there are insufficient funds to pay for School Resource Officers. In lieu of such officers, Byrd believes teachers and… View Article

Malcolm Gladwell Gun Control Won’t Work, So We Need More Gun Control

by AWR Hawkins Liberal advocate Malcolm Gladwell recently admitted that more gun control will not stop school shootings and then immediately suggested its ineffectiveness should not undermine the liberals’ push for more of it. Gladwell is an author and also writes for New Yorker magazine. According to Newsbusters, Gladwell was taking part in a New Yorker podcast when he was asked, “How big a problem is the availability of guns?” Gladwell’s response: Well, uh, you know, uh, those who say that you can solve this problem with gun control are engaging in a fantasy. Um, can you prevent some cases of… View Article

CT Bill Would Confiscate Guns Before Allegations of Abuse Proven

by AWR Hawkins A new bill introduced in Connecticut changes state law so that guns are confiscated from the subject of a protective order the moment the request for the order is filed rather than waiting until the accused has an opportunity to have his or her case heard by a judge. The measure is supported by state senator Mae Flexer (D-Killingly), who says, “The minute a woman comes forward and asks for a temporary restraining order is the most dangerous moment of her life.” Opponents of the measure point out that the request for a protective order on the… View Article

Hillary Clinton’s Proposals Will Eliminate Gun Makers in America

by AWR Hawkins During the March 6 Democrat Debate, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT)warned that Hillary Clinton’s proposals regarding gun manufacturers’ liability would literally eliminate gun makers in America. At the heart of Clinton’s proposals is the reversal of the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA)–an act which shields gun makers from frivolous lawsuits brought by those who want to hold gun makers liable for the illegal use of guns that are legally made and sold. Clinton is campaigning on removing the protections afforded by the PLCAA so that gun makers and gun stores will be a viable target for lawsuits… View Article

Smith & Wesson Sales Up ‘61.5%’ over Same Time Last Year

by AWR Hawkins At the close of the quarter, ending January 31, Smith & Wesson’s sales were up “61.5%” compared to the same time last year. The jump is sales is largely attributed to the growing market for compact, self-defense handguns and Smith & Wesson’s continued developments in that market. According to CNN Money, Smith & Wesson CEO James Debney commented on the surge in sales by pointing to a “long-term trend toward personal protection.” And he said, “smaller handguns designed for concealed carry and personal protection” are very popular right now. In fact, Debney pointed out that such handguns made up… View Article

Democratic Gov. Vetoes Permitless Concealed Carry for West Virginia

by AWR Hawkins On March 3, West Virginia Governor Earl Ray Tomblin (D) vetoed HB 4145, a bill which would have allowed residents to carry a gun concealed without a permit in the state. This is the second time Tomblin has vetoed permitless concealed carry. He first did it during the 2015 legislative session, after being pressured by gun control groups like Moms Demand Action and by individual gun control proponents Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV). The NRA-ILA’s Dakota Moore commented on Tomblin’s most recent veto, saying, “Gov. Tomblin’s decision to veto this bill is unfortunate, especially considering the significant...

by AWR Hawkins Trump said there should be no restrictions on the Second Amendment and stressed that attacks on innocents can be prevented or curtailed if the people have the ability to shoot back. Fox News host Bret Baier pointed out that Trump had voiced support for an “assault weapons” ban in 2000, and Trump responded by saying he does not support such a ban. Baier asked Trump if he thinks there should be any restrictions on the Second Amendment and Trump answered, “No.” Trump added: I’m a big defender of the Second Amendment. And if you look at what’s happened,… View Article
