Oklahoma Senate Concurs with House: Second Amendment Is Your Open Carry Permit

by AWR Hawkins On April 20, the Oklahoma Senate voted 37-9 to pass legislation recognizing that the Second Amendment is a sufficient open carry permit. The legislation, HB 3098, had already passed in the House by a vote of 73-15. According to News 9, the Senate passed the bill via “a procedural move that forces the bill into conference committee” for one final look before it heads to Governor Mary Fallin (R). Murders Spike in 2015 in Democrat-Run, Gun-Controlled Cities

by AWR Hawkins A study released April 20 by the Brennan Center for Justice shows that the murder rate jumped 13.3 percent in America’s biggest cities during 2015. Three Democrat-run, heavily gun-controlled cities–Baltimore, Chicago, and Washington DC–“account for more than half” of the murder increase, the report admits. Tennessee Senate Passes Campus Carry

by AWR Hawkins On April 19 the Tennessee Senate passed campus carry for public schools colleges and universities. According to the Associated Press, campus carry passed the Senate by a vote of 28-5. The measure allows faculty and staff with concealed carry permits to carry handguns on campus for self-defense. Some professors have already staked their opposition to the measure, promising to quit teaching if it becomes legal to carry a gun for self-defense on campuses in Tennessee. Professor Withholding Recommendation for Female Student Who Likes Guns

by AWR Hawkins A professor writing under a pseudonym expressed her hesitancy April 18 to write a letter of recommendation for a female student who is pro-gun. The student–Sarah–is seeking entry into a “teacher-credential program,” and although her academic abilities are “not strong,” the professor recognizes her as “a class leader” with “great energy.” But the professor does not want to write a recommendation because of Sarah’s desire for a concealed carry permit and also because of comments Sarah made about shooting a rifle at a gun range. Mississippi Governor Signs Permitless Carry Bill

by AWR Hawkins On April 15 Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant (R) signed permitless carry legislation into law. The bill–House Bill 876–expands permitless carry in backpacks and satchels “to include belt and shoulder holsters.” It also allows churches to set forth safety policies that allow certain congregants to concealed carry in church buildings for the protection of themselves and others. The NRA-ILA reports that Bryant’s signature comes “despite months of misleading attacks by New York gun control advocate and billionaire Michael Bloomberg and his anti-gun state groups, Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action.” HB 876 takes effect immediately.
